Mississippi State University employs more than 4,500 people in positions needed to keep a large research institution functioning: office managers, public relations specialists, tech support personnel, and more. Other major employers in the county include Sitel (a call center), Starkville Public Schools, Oktibbeha County Hospital, and Wal-Mart.

On its webpage, Starkville bills itself as “Mississippi’s College Town.” While college students dominate, realize that keeping the state’s largest university operating involves a community of blended ages and talents. Starkville has a variety of apartment complexes, single-family homes, and even a retirement village. Also noteworthy is the fact that Starkville’s cost of living is about 14 percent lower than the national average.

Residents and students alike rattle cowbells to cheer on MSU’s Bulldogs at NCAA Division I sporting events. Others enjoy the arts through the Starkville Community Theater Company or the Starkville-MSU Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Outdoorsy- types head to the lakes and nature trails of nearby Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge.

The gender distribution at MSU and in Starkville as a whole are relatively equal. Tailgates, concerts, festivals, and other campus and community events provide opportunities to meet new people – one of whom might be that special somebody!
